The term refers to the twelve individuals chosen by some Shia muslims as infallible and respected successors to Muhammad. The term is commonly associated with the current leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is also the title of a book by Ayatollah Khamenei, The Care and Keeping of Muhammad’s children. Nawwābān-i Ḥusaynī refers to the "twelve who have descended from the Prophet and who are loved by the people" and in the Shia faith refers to the twelve successors of Muhammad. It is usually regarded as a political title, especially among those who refer to Ayatollah Khamenei as the "leader of the Islamic revolution" (or the “guide of the Muslims”).
